Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein invades Kuwait, and calls for Western country and U.S intervention are cast by other middle eastern countries. After Hussein refused to withdraw forces, Operation Desert Storm was launched by the U.S. On February 28th, 1991, a cease-fire was called by U.S president George H.W George, as most Iraqi forces had either surrendered or fled. Though the war was over, tension in a troubled region had just began. This is one of the only news stories Jean-Louis paid attention to in the time period before Florence left for college.
