General Uprising Against Papal Rule (1 oct 1375 año – 1 mar 1376 año)

Descripción:

Archbishop Giovanni Visconti’s purchase of Bologna brought occupation by Milanese troops and a levy of annual payments to the papacy. Upon Giovanni’s death five years later the Bolognese elected his legate Giovanni da Oleggio as signore in the hope of regaining their liberty. The new signori chose instead to sell the signory once again, spurning the Visconti for a higher offer from Pope Innocent VI.

Bologna thereby passed under the direct rule of the papacy once again. Renewed suppression of communal institutions and the ruinous cost of the pope’s anti-Viscontean policy led to a general uprising in the winter of 1375-75. [Terpstra, Lay Confraternities, 11]
