The Civil War was a conflict fought over the debate on slavery between the North and South. By the time of the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861, seven states left from the Union to form the Confederate States of America. The eight states that allowed slavery faced a crucial yet difficult decision. The states ultimately chose to remain in the union, and the country was formally divided. The Union, north side fighting for the abolition of slavery, and Confederacy, the south section fighting for state rights, were the two sides that were against each other in this destructive war that lasted four years.
