In 1958, Mildred Jeter, a black woman, and Richard Loving, a white man, got married in Washington, D.C. When they returned to Virginia, they were charged with breaking a law that prohibited interracial marriages. The court found them guilty, sentencing them to a year in jail, with the option to avoid it by leaving Virginia and not returning for 25 years.
