Byzantine emperor asks Pope Urban II for help against the Seljuk Turks.
Towards the end of 1095, the pope challenged Christians to take up their weapons and battle to recover the holy land.
"All who die by the way, whether by land or by sea, or in battle against the pagans, shall have immediate remission of sins. This I grant them through the power of God with which I am invested." -Pope Urban II
Took the holy city of Jerusalem in 1099.
