The stock market crashed in October of 1929, which caused America to fall into the worst Depression in its history --- the Great Depression. During 1930-1933, about 10,000 banks failed and many account holders rushed to pull their money from the bank before that bank failed, too, which caused more banks to fail. Many blamed the Fed for this economic crash, either in failing to stem lending that led to the crash or for failing to understand economics well enough to pursue policies that could have lessened the effect of the Depression.
