Location: current-day Afghanistan until the Bay of Bengal & Gujarat
Origins: nomadic, militant Sunni Muslims from central Asia
- mix of Turks & Mongols: descendants of Ghengis Khan
Babur: founder of empire
- founded the empire at the age of 18
- gunpowder & cannons allowed them to take over easily
- conquered Northern India and establishes empire in the area
Empire reaches hight under Babur's grandson Akbar (1556-1605)
Shah Jahan (Akbar's grandson) builds Taj Mahal and "wastes" resources
Decline
Empire begins to decline under rule of Aurangzeb (1658-1707): brings empire to largest geographic size but internally becomes weak
Empire never regains strength after Aurangzeb's death and will be taken over by the British in the mid-1800s
