A new leader in the Soviet Union took power and his name was Mikhail Gorbachev. He was unlike any of the previous leaders in the Soviet Union due to his mission to reform the nation and bring upon new ideas. These new ways of running things allowed for relations between the Soviets and America to grow in ways that have never been seen before.
