Vietnam had been under French colonial rule since the 19th century. The US and other members of SEATO joined forces with South Vietnam to challenge communist forces, the Viet Cong, and the North Vietnamese army. From 1965 to 1968, the US had the largest military presence in the war, which is the reason why this war is known as the American War. In 1973, there was a "third" Vietnam War between North and South Vietnam, but without any US involvement, which ended with a communist victory in 1975.
