Bardiya (Bardis or Pseudo-Smerdis) (21 jun 522 año aC – 3 dic 522 año aC)

Descripción:

Bardiya was another son of Cyrus, but whether he ever truly reigned over Persia is uncertain. Herodotus writes that Cambyses has Bardiya secretly killed in order to secure the throne.

While Cambyses is in Egypt, a Magian ruler comes forward pretending to be Bardiya (his true name was Gaumata). This ruler leads a rebellion against Cambyses and seizes the throne as Cambyses dies under mysterious circumstances. He maintains a false persona under the name Bardiya (or Smerdis), gaining popular support by cancelling taxation and conscription, and eliminating those connected to Cambyses.

Darius I, along with six other noblemen, plot to assassinate Gaumata and end his reign. The plot comes to fruition in September, 522 BC, and Darius claims the throne for himself.
