Vietnam War (1 nov 1955 año – 30 abr 1975 año)

Descripción:

The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, was a protracted conflict that took place from 1955 to 1975. It was fought between North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and South Vietnam, backed by the United States and other anti-communist nations.

The war had its roots in the post-World War II era when Vietnam was divided into two separate entities: the communist-led Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the anti-communist Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). The division was a result of the Geneva Accords in 1954, which sought to temporarily divide the country until elections could be held to determine its future.

However, the elections were never held, and both sides became increasingly hostile towards each other. The North Vietnamese government, led by Ho Chi Minh, aimed to reunify Vietnam under communist rule, while the South Vietnamese government, supported by the United States, sought to prevent the spread of communism.

The conflict escalated over time, with the North Vietnamese communist forces, known as the Viet Cong, launching guerrilla warfare tactics and initiating a protracted insurgency against the South Vietnamese government and its American allies. The United States, under President Lyndon B. Johnson and later Richard Nixon, committed significant military forces to support South Vietnam, employing conventional warfare strategies, including large-scale bombing campaigns and ground operations.

The war witnessed numerous battles and engagements, such as the Tet Offensive in 1968, which marked a turning point in American public opinion against the war. As casualties mounted and opposition to the war grew, the U.S. military involvement gradually diminished, eventually leading to a complete withdrawal of American troops by 1973.

Despite the Paris Peace Accords in 1973, which aimed to establish a ceasefire and political solution, the fighting continued between North and South Vietnam. In 1975, North Vietnamese forces launched a major offensive, capturing the capital city of Saigon and effectively ending the war. Vietnam was reunified under communist rule, and the war resulted in significant human casualties and widespread destruction.
