Voltaire grew up in the upper middle class, in a Catholic family. His family wanted him to be a lawyer, but he wanted to be a writer and a thinker. When he needed money, he and his friends found a loophole in the lottery using math, which allowed them to win a lot of money and become wealthy. He believed in freedom of religion, and he didn't like that religions had rules that people never really followed. Voltaire wrote the book, Candide, with the moral that everyone should "take care of their own garden". He believed that people shouldn't have blind optimism and hope. Voltaire criticized the French government, which earned him almost a year in prison, and after he was released, he caused even more trouble. After this, he was forced to flee France. Voltaire had many friends, including Frederic the Great. Finally, Voltaire believed in freedom of speech and thought that "by speaking out, you can call out the things that aren't right."
