The axis powers (Germany, Italy, Japan, and initially the Soviet Union) vastly expanded their territory quickly by use of new military technology and suppression of dissidents. The allied powers (everyone else but not Switzerland, and then the USSR joined them later) fought for the preservation of sovereignty, but actually for colonies. This war was important because it influenced how Europe was divided in the second half of the twentieth century, and because it established the United States and the Soviet Union as the remaining major world powers.
