Taiping Rebellion (1 ene 1850 año – 1 ene 1864 año)
Descripción:
The Taiping Rebellion was led by village schoolteacher Hong Xiuqian. He argued for a transformation of China and a removal of the foreign Manchu ruling class. The things it fought for included abolition of private property, the end of foot binding and concubinage, free education, simplification of the written language, and reading for all. The Taiping believed in equality of the sexes. Many joined voluntarily, but some were coerced. The gentry sided with the Qing government. However, the rebellion continued, only defeated by aid from Europeans. Soon, the Taipings were completely defeated, but the rebellion killed many by starvation as well as in battle. It also encouraged the Qing dynasty to strengthen Chinese culture while embracing European industrial power (the superficial self-strengthening movement).
