The formerly enslaved people of Haiti gained their independence from France, partially because France was so weakened from the Revolution, and from the Napoleonic wars. The Haitian revolution incited mass panic among white people because they feared uprising among the enslaved people they kept. The Haitian revolution established the Haiti, but it was a weak nation made weaker by an enormous sum that the French demanded in payment for freedom.
