The Song Dynasty was never a particularly strong dynasty, but it lasted a long time. The dynasty is remembered for its distrust of military leaders, focusing instead on the arts, civil administration, and education. Civil officials were paid handsomely, and the emperors of the Song expanded the bureaucracy greatly. The Song dynasty had a very weak military, and so it collapsed due to the attacks of the nomadic Manchurian Khitan. Then, The Jurchen conquered the Khitan, and the song empire only survived in the south. Finally, in 1279, the remnants of the Song were captured by Mongol forces. During the Song Dynasty, China was the most urbanized land in the world, with cities like Hangzhou. Foot binding also became a sign of beauty in Song China.
