The number of strikes umped during the winter of 1978-79. This was particularly done by public-sector unions seeking improved pay. The Labour government was keeping pay rises in the public sector to be under 5% to try and control the economy. However private sectors could afford to pay their employees above 5%. Public sectors wanted the government out of pay negotiations.
The Prime Minister was seen in Guadeloupe swimming as if on holiday. He also denied there was a 'Mounting chaos' in Britain. this made him look out of touch.
The Winter of Discontent would affect Labour's support for the next election greatly.
