World War I (28 jul 1914 año – 11 nov 1918 año)

Descripción:

World War 1 significantly impacted the course of political polarization in the United States. Not only did the war polarize lawmakers and the resulting policy, but it also polarized citizens on a number of issues, the most significant being immigration, civil liberties, and American foreign policy. There was widespread debate among Americans about the role of the country in international affairs. While some approached the war with an interventionalist outlook, many opposed interventions and did not believe that America should be involved in the war. With both the Espionage and Sedition Acts being passed during this time, the right to free speech was significantly limited and led to the prosecution of thousands of Americans who were outspoken in their views against the government. Moreover, the war fueled anti-immigration and anti-German-American attitudes, causing Americans to become divided in the prosecution of the "other". During the war, there were tensions between the socio-economic classes and unrest among the working class who demanded better conditions. All of these factors led to increased political polarization as a result of World War I.
