The purpose of the Selma to Montgomery March was to get blacks to register to vote in the South. They marched for 54 miles in Alabama from Selma to the state capitol. During the march, the protesters faced violence from white groups and others who didn’t support them. This march also helped raise awareness for the hardships of black voters and showed that the U.S. needed voting laws for everyone.
