Fought between 1861 and 1865, the American Civil War had a pivotal moment in the history of the United States. The industrial Northern States, who supported the abolition of slavery, saw the institution as a moral evil. However, the agricultural Southern states, whose economy relied on the institution of slavery, wanted to keep their economic reliance on the work of slaves. The entities started a war based on the issue of slavery and the issue of state rights and federal power. This war shows the deep conflict between the Northern states and the Southern states that shows the nature of polarization. Ultimately, the war resulted in the abolition of slavery and the foundations upon which civil rights would be established. It also, however, embodies the nature of polarization and ideological conflicts between the Northern and Southern states that persists today.
