Beginning after the September 11 attacks, the War on Terror was established as an instrument of security; however, the War on Terror has contributed to political polarization in the United States. The September 11 attacks instilled fear and the desire for vengeance among the American public. With this sentiment in mind, many politicians set themselves within public opinion as holding firm views on national security and an interventionist stance on military involvement. On the other hand, however, some politicians opposed this interventionist and strict stance. This sparked a widespread and ongoing debate about national security that is polarizing on either side of the aisle. Both sides of the issue view the other side as unpatriotic and this has created a sense of animosity between the two groups, further deepening the political divide. As debates about civil liberties, national security, and the use of military force contribute to this divide, no government action that was taken ever fully satisfied both groups. Because of this, the War on Terror significantly contributed to political polarization in the United States.
