The COVID-19 Pandemic (12 mar 2020 año – 17 mar 2023 año)

Descripción:

The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to polarization in America. The moment that the pandemic hit, the nationwide response approach became a highly politicized issue, with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle taking different stances socially, politically, and economically. There were also vastly different approaches taken to public safety measures including how extensive lockdown should be, mask mandates, and requirements regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. There was a staunch division between the viewpoints of Democrats and Republicans on the issues and each side viewed the effectiveness of the pandemic response through their own party’s ideology. The polarization among lawmakers spilled over to public opinion and citizens became deeply divided on issues related to the pandemic response based on their political affiliation. Given the nature of the state of emergency caused by the pandemic, previously existing economic, social, and racial disparities were highlighted at this time, further deepening political polarization. With individuals subscribing to different sets of beliefs regarding the pandemic and global health crisis about their political affiliation, the COVID-19 pandemic intensified political polarization in America.
