THE NORMAN CONQUEST (11 oct 1066 año – 1 ene 1453 año)

Descripción:

- 10,000 new words came from the Normans
- French was mostly used in “official business” words like judge, jury, evidence or justice.
- Latin was still used in church.
- The common man spoke English.
- English words like cow, sheep and swine had an “a la carte” version in French, like beef, mutton and pork.
• Intermarrying between Normans and British after 1204 helped the English to be reasserted even though French remained until 1362 as the language of Parliament. The two languages coexisted up until 1403.
