Evolution of Slavery in Virginia (1 ene 1640 año – 1 ene 1661 año)
Descripción:
Even before terms like slaves and slavery were invented the mindset of colonists was that skin colour and social status were supposed to be linked. There are several cases of runaway servants which is seen as an indicator for non-typical indentured servants' conditions.
The use of words like "to use ... forever" and serving for "lifetime" in contracts from 1641 show that slavery existed even before it was officially recognized in the Virginia laws.
In 1640 John Punch was captured after he tried to flee with a white Dutch and a white Scot. The "whites" were punished to serve additional years, whereas Punch was punished to serve his "entire natural life for his master." This made him the first slave for life plus this status was extended to his children and their children.
