along a 54-mile highway that connected selma to Montgomery there were three marches to fight to register blacks to vote. from the local authorities as well as white vigilante groups the marchers were met with deadly violence. Martin Luther King Jr. really brought to light the difficulty faced by black voters by his participation in the march.
