CONSEQUENCES
- worsened the already bleak economic situation of African Americans
- AA were the first to be laid off from their jobs and suffered from an unemployment rate 2 to 3 times that of whites
- lived under especially dire circumstances
- in early public assistance programs AA often received substantially less aid than whites
- 1932: approximately half of AA were out of work

SOLUTION
- 1933-1939: “New Deal“ = domestic program of the administration of U.S. president Roosevelt
- aimed to provide immediate economic relief and to bring about reforms to stabilize the economy
- benefits for AA: low-cost public housing was made available to black families, enabled AA youths to continue their education, gave many jobs
