The Warlord Era came to an end in 1937 with the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War following the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. The legacy of the Warlord Era is one of political fragmentation, instability, and a lack of central control, which contributed to the eventual rise of the Communist Party and the Chinese Civil War which followed the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War.
