The Chinese Civil War between the Chinese Communist Party (CPC/CCP) and the Chinese Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang (KMT) resumed in 1945, following a period of cooperation during World War II against the Japanese. The conflict was fought primarily in mainland China and lasted until 1949, when the CPC/CCP emerged victorious and established the People's Republic of China (PRC).

During this period, the CPC/CCP gained significant support from peasants and workers, and they implemented land reforms and other policies to win over the population. The KMT, on the other hand, struggled with corruption, inflation, and political instability.

The conflict was marked by several major battles, including the Huaihai Campaign and the Liaoshen Campaign, both of which resulted in significant losses for the KMT. The CPC/CCP also gained support from the Soviet Union, which provided them with military aid and training.

In 1949, the CPC/CCP successfully captured the cities of Beijing (then Peking) and Nanjing, forcing the KMT to retreat to Taiwan. The CPC/CCP declared the establishment of the PRC on October 1, 1949, with Mao Zedong as its leader. The victory of the CPC/CCP in the Chinese Civil War resulted in significant political and social changes in China, as the country transitioned to a socialist society under the leadership of the CPC.
