Jeroboam reigned for 22 years.
He was evil because he made golden calves and he and the people worshiped them.
"So the king [Jeroboam] took counsel and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, 'You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.'"
a. Before Jeroboam became king, a prophet tore his cloak into 12 pieces and gave 10 to Jeroboam and said that Jeroboam would get 10 tribes to rule over.
b. Ten of the tribes proclaimed Jeroboam their king after Rehoboam was unfair to them.
