From the time period of 1947 to 1950, French Indochina, which is now known as Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia was involved in a conflict which is called the First Indochina War. The war started because a group names the Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh, wanted to gain independence from the French. The French responded by using their military to stop this from happening causing a rebellion.

As the conflict escalated over time, and the french needed the aid of the United States, who then provided the nation with economic and military support to the French. However, despite the United States resources, the French were ultimately defeated in 1954, leading to the partition of the Vietnam war and the ecentual involvement of the United States in the War.
