Who:
Justinian I: Reclaimed a lot of lost roman land, but failed to get it all like he planned. Rewrote the Roman law.
Constantine I the great: The first empire of the Byzantine empire. Converted the people to Christianity.
Empresses Theodora created a lot of reforms for women.
What:
Family was at the center of society and their main religion was Christianity.
Had a Byzantine renaissance and art was a massive part of the culture.
The official language started as Latin, but became Greek later on.
They were influenced by Greek and Roman culture.
Their capital was Constantinople.
They started doing crusades, with the Holy Roman Empire, that targeted Muslim groups. For the most part the crusades failed through.
When: 330-1453
Where: Southeast of Europe and top of East Africa.
Why: Why did they do crusades?
They wanted to protect Constantinople, so they suggested to the Pope, in the Holy Roman Empire, that they should take back the holy lands.
End: They slowly lost power and got taken over by the Ottoman empire. They became a vassal state for the Ottomans, but they attacked the Byzantines and destroyed the empire completely.
Timely: Thriving empire in a time where most European countries were in constant war and not progressing. combined Roman culture with Christianity.
Lasting: Spread Christianity across Europe. Created the Eastern Orthodox Church, the second largest Christian church today.
