while on a search mission for another missing aircraft, the plane Louis was on crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Three survived, Louis, Phil, and Mac. Mac would not survive the 47 days the men spent on a small raft battling the ocean, attacks from the Japanese, starvation, dehydration, and sharks. Louis's perseverance would see him through this timeframe. “Louis was more concerned about sanity than he was about sustenance. He kept thinking of a college physiology class he had taken, in which the instructor had taught them to think of the mind as a muscle that would atrophy if left idle. Louie was determined that no matter what happened to their bodies, their minds would stay under their control”. (Hillebrand, ch. 14). Unfortunately, it would only be the beginning.
