The Running Begins (1 jun 1932 año – 1 sept 1941 año)

Descripción:

At age 15, and on his brother Pete's advice, Louie begins his running journey. A journey that would eventually take him to a collegiate mile record set in 1934 at 4 minutes and 21 secs and the 1936 Olympic games. During his high school national record run Zamperini's opponents cleated his shins yet he still managed to complete the race. His preparation for these Olympics came with their own challenges. Louis had to accept he would not be able to compete at the 1500 m and would have to change his target to the 5000m, a much more gruelling race. Louie trained and competed in the 5000m, he did not win the gold medal (8th place) but did obtain the Olympic record in the final lap in an astounding 56 seconds. One by one, runners came up ahead and faded away behind. “All I had,” Louie would say, “I gave it.”. (Hillebrand, Pg 36). This record gained him a face to face with Adolf Hitler.
