In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr launched a campaign in Birmingham to undermine the city’s system for racial segregation. The campaign began on April 3, 1963, with sit-ins, economic boycotts, mass protests, and marches on City Hall. On April 12th, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested for violating an anti-protest injunction and was jailed. From May 2nd, school-aged volunteers began to march. On May 3rd, Eugene Connor ordered the police to use violent tactics against the peaceful demonstrators. This causes outrage and gained national attention. John F Kennedy proposed a civil rights bill on June 11th. The civil rights activists were still threatened after that even though they negotiated an agreement with local reforms.
