The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle of World War One. it was not only the longest battle, but also the most expensive. this was caused because of the extensive length of the battle. it started with a German attack on the French town of Verdun. the opening attack from the Germans was a 10-hour bombardment with extreme concentration of firepower. the French were forced back, but they did not break and back down from the battle. the fighting continued for almost a year.
