Montesquieu was known for his belief in a separation of powers. He pioneered the practice of writing works with satire and double meaning, including the Persian Letters, which fictionally used outsiders' (Persians) perspective to criticize Europeans. He expressed his concern for absolutism in The Spirit of Laws.
