Mu’awiyah (1 ene 661 año – 1 ene 680 año)
Descripción:
Mu'Awiyah was the first Umayyad caliph. Prior to becoming caliph, he opposed most the leading figures of early Islam including Muhammed, Ali and Uthman. Nonetheless his allegiances swayed in time to maintain influence. He took control of Egypt and was poised to take the caliphate as soon as Ali was assassinated.
In addition, his wife, Maysun bint Bahdal was a famous poet who wrote a lot about how little she liked Mu'awiyah and successfully got a divorce. Her poetry reflects an evolution of the times towards more outspoken women and more women's rights.
