Crimean War - A war fought in 1854-1856 by Britain and France against Russia. Piedmont supported France against Russia and Austria remained neutral. Cavour chose to participate in the Crimean War to gain the trust of France and Britain and to convince Austria to let its guard down. After the Crimean War, Italy was invited to sit at the peace talks and it was there that Cavour met French emperor Napoleon III. They would stay in contact for the next two years.
