Henry IV, formerlly Henry of Navarre and also called Henry the Great, was an absolute monarch in France. He acquired a country devastated by civil wars between Protestants and Catholics, poor harvests and starvation, and declined commercial activity. He defused religious tensions and rebuilt France’s economy. He was initially Protestant but converted to Catholicism, and issued the Edict of Nantes. He lowered taxes, charged royal officials an annual fee, and improved infrastructure. He was murdered in 1610 by a Catholic.
