-don't have to be secretive about religion anymore; built their own churches that became central community institutions like National Baptist COnvention and African Methodist Episcopal Church;churches doubled as schools, social centers, meeting halls; minsters often were political spokesmen too; freedpeople= new children of Israel
-black churches, schools, businesses, newspapers, and civic groups flowered
-worked hard to fight for desegregation but knew it would face backlash. others wanted kids in all-black schools so they could focus on learning not worrying about getting hurt by white kids
-black schools gave jobs to African American teachers and principals
