External Event Babylonian siege of Jerusalem (1 ene 597 año aC – 1 ene 581 año aC)

Descripción:

At the same time King Nebuchadnezzar II was spearheading multiple architectural projects, he led military campaigns against neighboring nations/city-states. Nebuchadnezzar is infamously remembered in Judeo-Christian religions as the king who destroyed the kingdom of Judah and captured Jerusalem. He deported powerful, skilled, and wealthy Jews to the city of Babylon in order to weaken the country of Judah and diminish the possibility of rebellion. Various stages of deportations over the period 597 to 581 BCE were used as punishment for uprisings within the vassal state of Judah. While in exile in Babylon, Jews were able to farm, get married, raise families, buy property, accumulate wealth, and exercise their own religion. However, this period of exile ended when Cyrus the Great gave Jews permission to return to Judah upon his conquest of Babylon. This can be seen as another reason as to why Cyrus so easily took over, with the 14,000 to 18,000 Hebrews in exile ready for new leadership.
