Philosophy: As prison populations grew, solitary confinement, which was supported by the Pennsylvania system, became prohibitively expensive. One of the first large prisons to abandon the Pennsylvania system was the New York State Prison at Auburn. The new Auburn system focused on having inmates living, eating, and working together in enforced silence.

Other Info: A number of European governments sent representatives to study the virtues of the two American systems and found the Pennsylvania system to be more conducive to reformation.
