Descripción:
- Russian forces still remained disorganised due to their early losses in the war
- The war had virtually bankrupted the nation
- People wished for an end to the war
- The Provisional Goverment refused to back out of the war as it would mean forefiting private loans from the allies
- Kerensky promoted to Minister of War in May
- Kerensky designed an attack to boost the morale of soldiers
- Petrograd Soviet supported the move claiming it might ‘stop the disintegration in our army’
- Russian army attacked Austrian line on the 18th of June and achieved immediate success by capturing 18,000 prisoners
- German reinforcements arrived and inflicted massive casualties
- Sheila Fitzpatrick estimates the casualties to be 200,000
