In 1488 a bold captain named Bartholomeu Dias sailed to Africa. He was the first European to sail around Africa from the west coast to the east coast. He was sponsored by Portuguese King John. He discovered the tip of Africa and called it Tempestuous Cape (Cape of Good Hope).
