Patriot Capt Morris Mruphy went to the home of a noted Tory named Blackman. Murphy whipped Blackman to learn where his Tory sons were. Blackman refused and after 200 lashes, Murhpy stopped. Gideon Gibson, the free mulatto and uncle of Murphy questioned his treatment of Blackman. Gibson made one last challenging comment as Murphy was leaving and Murphy shot him dead.
