The fierce Chou people overthrow the Shang. They study astronomy and medicine and produce great works of art.
Hinduism becomes popular, teaching that there are many gods but all part of a single world spirit. A man named Siddhartha Gautama founds the Buddhist religion. Seeing
the numerous gods, rituals and temples of
Hinduism, he called for a simpler way. He called people to renounce their possessions and live lives of strict self control for the sake of inner peace now and in eternity. He himself died of illness around 400 BC.
