The written narratives of the words and deeds of Jesus are popular and copious enough for somebody to do a comparison with the Jewish scriptures and realize that the two portrayals of divinity don’t line up at all. Enter the docetic Christian Marcion, who writes his Antithesis specifically to make these comparisons.

Marcion forms a canon consisting of a version of Luke and the Pauline + deutero-Pauline epistles. The proto-orthodox sect responds by editing Luke to support their beliefs and organizing its own canon of writings. It’s possible that this is when the impetus for proper names on the gospels first arose. This struggle may have left an imprint on non-canonical literature (authorship attribution of the epistle of Barnabas; vague disparaging comment in Shepherd of Hermas re: those who wish to occupy the first seats).
