Fourth child of Henry II. Increased taxes, the king’s excommunication and his unsuccessful and costly attempts to regain his empire in Northern France made John hugely unpopular with his subjects.
- 1209: The Pope Innocent III excommunicated him because he refused to accept the new archbishop he'd appointed
- 1213: John was forced to submit as a vassal of the Church and England became a Papal feif ruled by the archbishop of Canterbury,
- 15th June 1215: The barons compelled John to sign Magna Carta, the Great Charter, which reinstated the rights of all his subjects.
- He has been termed “the worst English king”.
