The Civil War April 12, 1861–April 9, 1865 (12 abr 1861 año – 9 abr 1865 año)

Descripción:

-America's bloodiest War
-Not solely about slavery
-MI, KY, MD, and DE (border states) were slave states that fought for the Union
-Northerners were fighting to preserve the Union
-Southerners were fighting for their states' rights to govern themselves
-Lincoln was not interested to free the slaves, just to preserve the Unions, abolishing slavery was part of that
BELOW ARE NOT THE SPECIFICS OF THE BATTLES, BUT THEIR IMPACT ON THE WAR
-The Battle of Antietam: Fought in Sept. 1862, was the first battle fought in the East counted as a "victory" for the Union, as they caused the Confederacy to retreat. Gave Lincoln the Platform to announce the Emancipation Proclamation. Also showed Britain and France that the Union wasn't a lost cause and put off countries possibly helping the Confederacy
-The Battle of Gettysburg: Fought in southern PA. Most Northern point the Confederacy had reached. Lee's troops suffered massive casualties and were forced to retreat. Massive confidence boost for the Union
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Civil War's effects on the Confederacy
-Political: Southern states fought to maintain the right to govern themselves locally, but the Confederate gov't. ended up having a greater central control than the states ever experienced. Jefferson David took control of the southern economy, railroads, commercial shipping, and enforced a military draft
-Social: Davis suspended the habeas corpus (now, if you're arrested, you don't get a trial and go straight to jail), and class tensions arose from the military draft. The wealthy could hire surrogates to perform military service in their place, exempted anyone who owned more than 20 slaves as long as their plantations fed the army and the Confederacy, and the poor had no choice but to serve.
-Economic: Davis imposed taxes to force the South to compensate for what it lost when cutting of itself from northern commerce, rapid inflation (300%) was brought with the rapid economic growth, paychecks stopped having value and many were plunged into poverty, the draft required many small farmers to serve in the army which caused even greater poverty as many families couldn't tend to the farms w/o the men
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Civil War's effects on the Union
-Economy received a boost as the war demanded for war-related goods, such as uniforms and weapons, this spurred manufacturing
-Many entrepreneurs became extremely wealthy, and in-turn became greedy; overcharged the gov't. for services and products (war profiteering)
-Some sold Union gov't. worthless food and clothing
-Gov't. looked away for the price of a bribe
-Corruption was very widely spread
-There was also an inflation, though it was much less than the South at 10-20%
-Workers were worried about job security so they formed unions
-Businesses would blacklist union members and forced new employees to sign contracts stating that they wouldn't join unions
-Violence was used to break strikes
-Lincoln suspended the habeas corpus in the border states to make it easier to arrest secessionists especially in Maryland
-Lincoln also initiated the printing of a national currency (green-backs) which was a precursor to modern currency
