On April 12, 1861, the Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The Confederate states argued that even though it was a U.S. military fort, it was in the south, so it belonged to the south. By attacking the fort, the south had just started the Civil War
This was the first battle in the Civil War.
